The war in Vietnamstarted in the time of World War II and stopped in 1975. The events of World War II were followed by First Indochina War, which was followed with civil war in Vietnam. However, the mass battles in this country started in 1965, when the United Statestroops were involved into the War. The number of fatalities from both sides made the Vietnam War one of the cruelest in the history of mankind. The objective of this essay is to analyze the international policy in the second half of the 20th century and answer the question “Why Was It Not Possible to Achieve Peace in Vietnam Before 1965 and Therefore Avoid Killing 3 Million People?”

Historical Background

Vietnamwas the French colony from the second half of the 19th century. During the World War II the power ofFrance decreased and in 1945 Hồ Chí Minh announced the establishment of Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Here was the first opportunity to establish peace inVietnam, but the French colonial ambitions prevented this.

Francetried to returnVietnambut the attempt was unsuccessful. After the 8 years of war conflict, known as the First Indochina War, theVietnamwas divided on two parts and the war was finished. The war that is known as a Vietnam War, started in 1955, just after the end of the First Indochina War. The main opponents in this war were two parts ofVietnam:  South and North. At that moment these parts realized the global opposition of two main ideologies within one country. After the World War Two the world tended to be bipolar. The block of communists countries headed by theUSSR, including the redChina, opposed theUSwith its allies. The mission of theUnited Statesas the global peacemaker was aimed on the prevention and blocking of communist and pro-communist countries and governments.  TheUSprovided the military support to the anti-communist regimes all over the world.
