Naturally, the government of North Vietnam had to continue socialist reforms but they seem to be secondary compared to idea of the national liberation. It is necessary to understand that in the current situation, as the Cold War progressed in 1950s, North Vietnamese government perfectly realized that North Vietnam could not afford the long-lasting war with France and later the US being left alone. Obviously, North Vietnam could not rely on the support of the US as one of the two superpowers in the world at that moment since this country would hardly agree to deteriorate its relations with France for the sake of the freedom of Vietnam, especially in the atmosphere of panic fear in the face of the communist threat within the US.
In such a situation, North Vietnam had no other alternative to gain national independence but appeal to the support of socialists states, the USSR and China. As their support in the 1950s grew more and more significant the US could not ignore the socialist threat in southeast Asia and actually attempted to defeat the socialist regime in North Vietnam that resulted in the Vietnam War of 1959-1975.
