“There are also cases where artifacts seem to literally embody values. Take, for example, the overpasses that cross Wantagh Parkway to Long Island, New York, and in particular to Jones Beach. Robert Moses, the designer responsible for these bridges, very consciously decided that they should be built at a height above the parkway that would make it possible for buses to pass under them. This decision, according to Moses’ biographer, reflected Moses’ racial prejudice and social class bias. He low overpasses meant that while more well-to-do whites could use the parkway for commuting and to reach destinations along it for recreation, it would not be accessible for low income citizens, many of whom were people of color, who needed to rely on public transportation.”
First of all, this quote demonstrates an extraordinary and interesting example of the influence of the social aspects on the final result of the technologic project. An architect takes into account his social views and not the general utility of his creation. He embodied his own social perceptions and views on the society’s order in this technological creation. The cultural, media and political contexts influence the technoscience in many ways.
It’s simply one of the best demonstrations of the social nature of the technology, and how subjective it is.
All technical artifacts, no matter when they were created, they all express someone’s values, thoughts, ideas, restrictions, rules, philosophy, etc.
In general, this situation with the overpasses (that cross Wantagh Parkway to Long Island) shows how technology may become a tool of expression the social prejudice. It may be perceived nowadays as totally unfair.
Therefore, author leads us to the idea that the technoscience has to concentrate on making itself as objective as it is possible nowadays, in order to avoid such situations in the future. There is a number of methods that can be used in order to avoid such mistakes, for instance, the skepticism. The approach may be scrutinized in order to find the possible errors that were caused by the possible subjectivity of the author. (more…)

The analysis of the text

“I believe two features of our discursive landscape – the realm of ideas, concepts, categories, and the many beliefs we take for granted – make it difficult to think critically about science and technology. I call these discourses scientism and technological progressivism.”
Our lives are substantially transformed by the rapid changes in technology and science. On the one hand the use of progress to ease the problems of society is a noble thing, but on the other it seems to have double-edged effect on the people.
In my opinion, the modern society in general is rather shallow; an average member of society doesn’t feel the necessity to plunge into specific concept to research it deeply. Nowadays we are overloaded with the various information and we tend to digress from subject to subject.
We approach the science as consumers, we mix the definitions, we can’t separate and credibly estimate a certain separate aspect. We are not able to make a distinction between our values and the facts. Author claims that the facts are more credible than the values. The technical or scientific developments should be assessed in isolation, and values should not be taken into the consideration, only the facts. This is a very complicated task for a member of the public, therefore only specially trained professionals are able to make an appropriate scientific analysis. The major negative effect that technological progressivism is able to cause is vagueness. (more…)

The development of technologies changes the life of the modern society and each individual consistently. In recent years, technologies have influenced substantially the development of the modern society contributing to the change of the lifestyle of people, changing the communication style as well as enlarging substantially opportunities for communication. In this respect, the emergence of new telecommunication technologies and information technologies is particularly prospective. The appearance of new technologies, such as cell phones, VoIP or Bluetooth led to the change of the communication of people and transmission of data. In actuality, people can benefit from new technologies, which increase the mobility of people and allow them to communicate regardless of their physical location. At the same time, it is worth mentioning the fact that, today, technologies develop at the unparalleled pace and it is quite difficult to trace the evolution of technologies which are improved very fast, while the emergence of new technologies contributes to their wide implementation in the everyday life of people. The introduction of new technologies often puts companies, which develop these technologies, in an advantageous position, but the leadership is extremely difficult to maintain because of the threat of the appearance of new technologies, which are better than existing ones. In such a situation, ordinary users can enjoy the growing competition in the field of telecommunication and information technologies, which are rapidly progressing and, today, this field is particularly prospective and rich in innovations.  (more…)

Custom essays on How Professors Feel & Think About Technology & What Are Their Attitudes Toward Technology

// June 18th, 2012 // No Comments » // Free essays

Nowadays, some professors have negative attitude to the technology. Sometimes they think that it simplifies things and people do not perform any efforts to find information or to study properly. Professors even consider technology useless in some aspects and they are also against e-books. Some professors say that students have to go to the libraries to find the proper material, to study effectively and only there they can get the best knowledge.
But some professors consider the modern tendencies as a plus and they are in favor of using modern technologies in people’s lives. They claim that people should know how to depict the most useful information and how to use it, how to seek the truthful information and to have an access to the newest data. Professors who do not support the technological progress have an argument that for example in internet there is so much false information considering many things, that the information can be simplified and copied. They state that this never happens in the books, in the sources of the important data which can be found at libraries. The professors also mention that reading e-books is not so useful as reading the paper book, as there is a constant distraction and a person has another feeling when he reads online. (more…)

Technological progress in the contemporary world custom college essay

// May 28th, 2012 // No Comments » // Free essays

Things change a lot in cotemporary world. The world itself changes, becomes more advanced. Everything is made for the convenience of a man. And the main reason for many inventions – is to make man’s life easier. Inventions that save time and perform different actions as a substitute to the man’s actions. If it were not for the technological progress we still would have been “cave” people. Progress along with the development nowadays is evaluated through technology. Technological development started being the leading power in our world long ago and now it is in its blossom. So many things depend on it and it is very hard to imagine the existence of humanity without it at all. If to talk abstractly, technology is the eyes we see the world through. We do not see the eyes themselves while observing everything around us and therefore we are more likely to believe that we have no eyes and we can see without them. People just get so used to having eyes to see that they stop actually remembering that they have them.

So, technology is the correct issue to talk about in terms of potential development. Such spheres as the manufacturing technology, medical technology, the technology of the infrastructure without even mentioning the space-travel technology, have irreversibly changed the culture of each country, providing more opportunities for life expansion. Indeed, technology is what actually separates human beings from the primates in the zoo and to deny this means to negate one of the vital factors of the contemporary world.

3. Technology and development

People do not trust technology in spite of all the benefits it has brought to them. This fear seems to be unreasonable especially after the fact that technology has saved the human race from malaria and mud huts [1]. Well, one of the greatest troubles concerning technology is the fact that people always put up the environment pollution as the argument that is supposed to cover all the advantages modern technology beings to the contemporary world. In his book “The environment, our natural resources, and modern technology”, Dr. Thomas R. DeGregori reveals all the technological illusions of the contemporary humanity. The book reveals the notion of “green consumerism” that is used by those always yelling in the “save the earth” agitations. (more…)

“Today, science and technology need no modifiers as they have become universal”

Dr. Thomas R. DeGregori

What would the life of the planet be without technology? Though million of people claim that technology has separated humanity from nature and converted it into a conglomerate of “lifeless robots”, technology is still the source of the immense development that people tend not to notice. The real truth is that technology has become such an integral part of human’s life that it has become invisible and transparent. This plays a trick on human minds giving them the illusion that they can easily live without the technological progress and they do not need the development it brings.

The word technology obviously ahs a Greek origin and is literally the science of craft. Nowadays, technology has become a kind of a tool, a technique to achieve the goals that have been impossible for many years. The humanity has been on the moon, explores the galaxy, is constantly converting incurable diseases into myths… Technology tries to predict what the humanity will need tomorrow and creates corresponding innovations today. IT-specialists are struggling with the disintegration generated by the computer era, trying again to bring together data and applications. Integration of corporate data and applications is a task that has long-standing in front of many organizations, but until recently, technological capabilities in this area were rather limited. Fortunately, now there are three techniques that can help: an enterprise application integration (EAI), enterprise information integration (EII) and software for extract, transformation and loading (ETL).

These technologies can be used for a wide range of problems: from the integration of real-time integration to batch and from data integration to application integration. To integrate data in real time is best suited technology EII; for Packet Data Integration – ETL; and for the integration of applications in real time or batch, the most appropriate tool is the technology of EAI. The Mortgage Industry has struggled because of fragmented technology issues which cause many problems with a smooth operation.

The legacy systems in the financial services industry were built about 30 years ago and they still continue to play a great role in technology infrastructure a big quantity of institution. There are some mainframe-based banking systems that are still used widely, as they have proven to be extremely stable (Scheuble 2004).

The problem is that those systems were well-designed and well-planed for that time, but the programmers were just limited by the capabilities of the applications they used. The source code that was used for those systems was very complex, so it made the development process exhausting and time-consuming.

Further, because of accommodation of new functionality and modernization those systems became more complex, or even too difficult and very expensive, so the lenders started to look for other applications for providing their solutions. (more…)
