Ever since the primitive human communities began to take care of those who were no more able to provide for by their own, humankind has been no more belonging to animal world. Since then neither subject of any monarch (whatever tyrant he be) nor a citizen of any republic has been supposed to be deprived of live not for having some committed act or omission. All the World Religions rest the responsibility for arbitrary deprivation of live exclusively upon God, inasmuch as the ways of His are inscrutable. So shall humans be allowed to assume the God’s role? In fact legalizing euthanasia means exactly that.
The very term “Euthanasia” derives from Greek and is for “good death”. Also known as “mercy killing”, euthanasia is the act of intentionally depriving someone of live or helping some person to die. Basically such interfering with the course of nature is a kind of murder committed under the pretext of compassion. Just the reverse, it encourages abuse offering doctors the right to kill those whose pain they are supposed to relieve. Dr. J. Forest Witten says that euthanasia would offer relatively small group of medics the “power of life and death” over those who are guilty of nothing but of being born or getting ill” (Humphries). A church reprobates euthanasia fully. Conviction concerns each encroachment upon human life – both in the case of abortion and in the case of euthanasia. But in a question about the waiver of artificial life-support a church is not so emphatic and comes from next principles. In the case of presence of the least chance on an exit from the comatose state it is necessary to use all possible methods to support life of patient. It is special important then, when a patient is not able independently to say of the consent. But if the comatose state is irreversibly, it’s not necessarily to use the painful and expensive methods of both financial and personal character. Artificial sustention of human life at complete absence of cerebral activity, reflexes, independent breathing and palpitation would be an outrage on dying man and heavy trauma for his relatives.
It is possible to bring three objections against its prohibition. At first, because as pain, related to continuation of life, is also evil; does a doctor do less evil, renouncing to carry out voluntarily euthanasia, than executing it? A refuse to resort to euthanasia means a decision to have a pain; it is a not choice of pain as itself. Although pain in itself is bad and its infliction is evil, the decision to feel pain is morally. It is the act of firmness.
Secondly, aren’t the death penalty and fatal acts of self-defense also choice of death? The executioner has the certain intention to kill the condemned.
Thirdly, and really choice lesser of two evils is not morally preferable in instance where in a prospect is only evil? In the basis of general-accepted permission to use the euthanasia the principle of “self-government” lays — the idea that everybody has a right to accept the own decisions about actions which influence exceptionally on him. During many years the theme of euthanasia causes an ambiguous reaction in society. Attention to the problem of euthanasia grew with development of public progress, and in particular the technologies of maintenance of vital functions seriously ill people. It is difficult to overestimate this theme, at first, because it is related to the dearest thing that a man has, – with his life, and secondly – by reason of small studying of this problem, its insufficient interpretation in works of scientists-lawyers and practically complete absence of the proper legal acts in the legislation of the country.
Numerous disputes constantly flash among physicians, lawyers, psychologists, politicians, religious figures. However it is not succeeded to hear the clear answer on a question about justified of euthanasia practice.
I my essay I aim to find positives and negatives of euthanasia and determined its influence upon the healthcare system.
There are several ideas, which are able to have an effect on the healthcare system. The first problem is: who can determine the situation, when the euthanasia can be held. And how this decision can influence upon the people’s trust to the medical service? Unfortunately, euthanasia can be the method of removing the person by dishonest people. The reasons can be different.
Many scientists fear that formal permission of euthanasia can become a certain psychological brake for the search of new and more effective facilities of diagnostics and treatment of seriously ill people, and also become the reason of the carelessness in providing the medical service to such patient.
A reanimation helps to them requires not only large financial cost but also enormous tension of physical and heartfelt powers of medical stuff. Exactly absence of the proper treatment and care can provoke requirements of the seriously ill person to accelerate a mortal end, that will allow a doctor fully halt any treatment and care of him. There is another reason of necessity of the legal adjusting of this question. (more…)

The healthcare system faces to different ethical issues almost everyday. However there are some topical issues that concern not only the health care but the whole society. Euthanasia is one of such issues. The article in Newsweek “The case for killing Cranny” by Evan Thomas is about the assisting death and some problems of health care to seniors in the USA.
The article summary
The author’s mother passed away in the age of 79. She was a long-time smoker and died from emphysema. Her last days were hard and painful not only for her but for her relatives too. However her doctors did their best to prolong her life, even against her will. Current legislation does not allow euthanasia, and even more, it forces doctors to provide all necessary and unnecessary treatment and tests under penalty of negligent suit. This is just the mechanism of healthcare system. “We expect doctors to make heroic efforts—especially to save our lives and the lives of our loved ones.” End-of-life care sometimes is unwanted. “Studies show that about 70 percent of people want to die at home—but that about half die in hospitals.” The government is afraid to start talking about these issues, but at the same time “most of the uncontrolled growth in federal spending and the deficit comes from Medicare”. The author suggests that most of elderly call the doctor when they need no medical assistance but just a communication. He proposes to take in attention the innovative approaches in Massachusetts and Wisconsin. (more…)

Many scientists suppose that formulation “right on death” in legislation of different countries, – unsuccessful, as possessing a right on death a man will insist on carrying out the wishes the third persons, that legalizes the mercy killing actually, and it, in same queue, can entail certain abuses. It is suggested to use the phrase “the right of the person- to die with dignity”. I think that it is hard to disagree with this variant. There are even several organizations that try help people to die. For example, it is well-known organization “Compassion in death”. Activity of members of this society “Compassion in death”, come across resistance those, who objects to Euthanasia on the ethics considering. As representatives of Catholic Church consider, activity of similar organizations allows supposing that life of certain group of people presents a less value, than all other. Patients, whose illnesses have a mortal character and financial position of their families is low, can with much more willingness to go on such suicide. The presence of such organizations, as “Compassion is in death”, can push them on an idea, that to go away from life is their debt. At that rate made decision already not voluntarily, but under influence of circumstances. Other reason of opponents of Euthanasia is possibility of error in any diagnosis. Many doctors, members of “Compassion in death” consider that their work in society is a method to settle self-contradiction between the debt to support life sick and by a direct duty to facilitate his sufferings. We should turn our attention to ethical approaches that described this fact in their own way. Modern ethics supposes: if acceptable, that death can be blessing, a dying form must not come into question and estimated somehow isolated and only in an aggregate the phenomena. In fact fascist propaganda, justifying a mass extermination mental and physically inferior people, “Euthanasia” profiteered exactly on this ambiguity of term, hesitating between a process and result. The newest period within the framework of which a question is now examined about what Euthanasia, is named the applied ethics. It supposes the very clear differentiating of ethics categories depending on what they are used to. In our case we can use such science as bioethics, and in its scopes discussions are conducted, for example, about abortions, about moral status of embryo and about Euthanasia.
I have one example of Euthanasia application. If patient was diagnosed with incurable disease, received an unfavorable prognosis and he has to live no more than 6 months, he must twice orally and one time in writing form to ask about Euthanasia. Such terms are legislatively fastened after afore-mentioned procedure in the American state Oregon. Thus, a patient must be responsible and capable, an interval between statements must be no less than two weeks, and a diagnosis about incurability is confirmed by two doctors. A mortal dose is appointed by a doctor and accepted by a patient. (more…)

I want to discuss ethical aspect of Euthanasia and I have a little philosophical reasoning on this topic. A man is mortal, and death is inevitable. Destiny of doctors, in whose power we can find delivering a person from sufferings, appears the higher type of self-realization, which is found in many cases faced to death. There are situations, when doctors’ actions contradict to the understanding of inevitability of mortal end. And however a doctor tries to prolong every day and every minute of patient’s life. Analyzing different interview with sick people we understand that doctor’s action goes against logic and people suffered from their illness so much that they ask for death. In acknowledgement of these words I want to quote as example one letter of a sick person, who asked for the last help. Harris wrote: “Dear doctor! A doctor is under an obligation to fight for life, but not for sufferings. My torments are unbearable. It is higher than human forces. Nothing can help me. The greatest and most desirable –it is to halt my torments. Continuation of sufferings of the mortal patient is an evil. In fact medicine is sympathy, compassion, and mercy. Does it can be reconciled with that to be reason of continuation of torments? A law is not in a right to forbid a sick man to dispose of own life, if this life grew into one sufferings. Voltaire is right: “If all is lost and there is not a hope, life is disgrace, and death is a debt”. I beg you to help me to die” (Harris, 2001). When I have read this letter I was greatly impressed by the words of this person and it is hard to stand on the point against or for Euthanasia. I have one more opinion about Euthanasia from the person, who proclaims its prohibition. According to internet source we see “that Euthanasia is a bad thing because it is voluntary which means that you have the choice to pick if you want to kill another person. Another bad part about this is that people are allowed to commit murder on other people who have disabilities. An easy death is when someone wants to end a life faster. When people want to commit an easy death: one out of ten people who have disabilities will have side effects such as vomiting and fits and also take a longer time to reach their point to die. Nowadays analyzing different medical approaches we can mention that that Euthanasia has caused a lot of conflict around the world. It is wide discussed question about its legalization and there are almost as many definitions as there commentators. We know that Holland was on the first place to legalize Euthanasia because it considers this act an important part of medical practice. The question of Euthanasia legalization is still open nowadays and there are many people who fight against its legalization, but there are also many people who consider that it should be legalized as an act of mercy. I’d like to summarize different opinions in this paper, because I interested in this disputable question.
The term “Euthanasia” came from the Greek notions “well” and “death”, and means a conscious action, resulting in death abysmally sick man relatively rapid and painless a way with the purpose of stopping of sufferings. Beauchamp and Childress wrote “Euthanasia is commonly defined as the act of bringing about the death of a hopelessly ill and suffering person in a relatively quick and painless way for reasons of mercy. In this report, the term Euthanasia will signify the medical administration of a lethal agent to a patient for the purpose of relieving the patient’s intolerable and incurable suffering.” (Beauchamp and Childress, 1989) (more…)

Euthanasia pros and cons custom term paper

The main and really unsolvable ethical problem arises with regard to patients who are unable to make their own decisions about how to stop living: being in a coma, mentally retarded, including suffering from senile dementia, and very young children. Their decision for them, if euthanasia will be legalized can be taken for someone else. Who it should be – doctors, relatives or representatives of the authorities? And what is the guarantee that their decision will be dictated by considerations of humanity and the interests of the patient? After all, had not yet erased from the historical memory of the Nazi program of “healing the nation” by mass destruction, weak-minded, mentally ill, disabled, homosexuals, “racially inferior”.

In my opinion euthanasia should have a place in our society, because nowadays many people suffer from awful diseases and they make suicides for one aim to put an end to these sufferings. It is understandable that euthanasia is also a kind of voluntary suicide, but in this case ill people have possibility to talk with their relatives and tell them truth why they can’t live any more. I think that euthanasia give people humanistic possibility to choose the way how and when to die. I also agree with the statement that our life was given to people by God, but in many cases people should decide what to do with their life during the life span. (more…)

Euthanasia should be stop or not? Research Paper

The main goals of this paper are to talk about euthanasia and to answer on the question that is was used for the title of the paper. Dual nature of the notion euthanasia is very good described in the question: Euthanasia should be stop or not? Describing the structure of the paper I want to mention that first of all we should define the term “euthanasia” and then look at its historical background. The next part of the work will be about debates around euthanasia and it will reflect pros and cons of this act. The last part of the work will show my unique opinion about the euthanasia and I also want to explain why I think so.

Concept “euthanasia” means a painless and light death in translation from Greek. It was presented in the XVI century by the F.Bacon and from those times it came in use as real scientific conception. The way of this term and the process was full of hardships; because its use in our speech doesn’t mean its legalization and many people suffer in their struggle for and against euthanasia. There are many definitions of this term in our literature and I would like to present one of them in this paper. Defining the term “euthanasia” it is necessary to use quotations made by Beauchamp & Davidson who said that “Euthanasia is the deliberate killing of a person for the benefit of that person. In most cases euthanasia is carried out because the person who dies asks for it, but there are cases called euthanasia where a person can’t make such a request.” (Beauchamp & Davidson, 1979) (more…)
