Chapter 8 raises the problem of business and environmental obligations. In fact, the development of contemporary business should be responsible in regard to the impact of business and new technologies on environment. In other words, today, it is obvious that business should take responsibility and obligations to protect environment or, at any rate, to minimize its impact on the environment. Business has a negative impact on the natural environment and environmental obligations of business could set standards for business and environment protection.
One of the major negative effects of the negative impact of business and human economic activities on the natural environment is the global climate change. In fact, the global climate change has a destructive impact on the environment as well as life of people and, naturally business. To put it more precisely, the global climate change leads to change of traditional methods of farming and provokes natural disasters, which undermine economic development of many regions and countries. However, the global climate change is the result of economic activities of humans mainly and the contemporary business aggravates the environmental situation, while consumerism of the modern society is another important contributor to the problem of the global climate change.
Different countries have different level of development and developing countries attempt to catch up with developed ones but accelerated industrialization and transition to post-industrial society have negative impact on the natural environment.
At this point, it is worth mentioning the fact that open market economy fails to meet ethical obligations because of several reasons. First, absence of democracy leads to the consistent diversity in legal norms regulating conditions of work, relationships between employees and employers, the impact of business on environment and other ethical and legal issues. Second, the role of consumers is also extremely important because consumers define consistently business development. To put it more precisely, companies attempt to meet consumers’ needs and expectations. They attempt to introduce new products and services that match consumers’ need and wants. (more…)
