In recent years, the issues of ethics, morality, ethical standards and social responsibility of organizations towards society, government and employees have become very popular. Questions are increasingly asked whether there is a system of universal moral code and rules of social behavior in business, and whether companies can disregard these rules. In our opinion, it is impossible not to focus sufficient attention on morality in the world, where corporate scandals involving influential businessmen who neglect the meaning of “honesty” and “ethics”, are becoming a typical event. This could be a specific signal of the increasing need of the society for the development of ethical consciousness. The formation of this need involves the emergence of a new type of leadership – an ethical one.

First of all, answers to these questions include understanding of the ethical leadership through the prism of its influence on a significant number of people. The scandal involving the President of the company “Enron” can serve as an example of unethical leadership. The President of the company and all the Enron executives were accused for the situation when the top-management had sold Enron shares worth millions dollars before the bankruptcy of the company became public. Thousands of employees lost not only work, but also their hopes for decent chair days, because under the pressure of management they kept their retirement savings in company shares, the price of which decreased from $90 to almost zero (Ortmeier and Meese 128-130).
Secondly, in order to understand the significance of ethical leadership, one can address to its negative definition, i.e. identify those aspects of leadership that are recognized unethical. However, it should be clearly realized that ethical leadership is a more complex formation than just a set of rules prescribing what a leader should not do and what he shouldn’t. At the same time, ethical leadership is something more than the correspondence to the rule “innocent till proven guilty”.
One of the options to define ethical leadership can be the understanding of that it is directed at – namely, at the creation and implementation of effective capacities through noble means. Only in the conditions of applying non-manipulative and justified (in terms of respect for human values) means, leader’s influence will be a long-term one, and the actions of his followers will be repetitive. In contrast, a leader may choose a different tactic behavior including intentional disinformation of his followers, creation of false claims to justify his own actions, creation of a kind of “double standards” in the organization. A leader may make a choice based on a position convenient for him, believing that the end justifies the means. However, if the behavior of a leader does not give the desired result and is not involving noble means, such leadership will bear a short-term character, because subordinates possess a much greater (than leaders suppose it is) ability to monitor and interpret the manipulations of a leader (Chen 264-271).
It is also clear that legal and labor codes are not able to cover the entire scope of leader’s decision-making process. So there’s a need for the new forms of control in situations, where manager’s level of responsibility is incommensurable with the price of mistakes that is to be paid for the consequences of unethical behavior.
