Naturally, taking into consideration the current educational trends among Arab-American women, it would be logical to dwell upon work participation of Arab-American women. Traditionally, Americans viewed Arab-American women as being deprived of an opportunity to get employed and the reasons was their cultural traditions and norms. However, it is just another myth about Arab-American women that still persists in American society. Basically, the cultural diversity of Arab-American community does not impose serious restrictions on the employment of Arab-American women, though it is necessary to agree that sometimes women are really treated as inferior within Arab-American community and they have to focus on the chores and family life, instead of professional career. Nevertheless, such cases are not widely spread in Arab-American community.
In fact, Arab-American women tend to take an active social position and, as a rule, they attempt to realize their potential, skills and abilities in professional life. In this respect, it is worth mentioning the fact that economic factors are very serious stimuli for the employment of women. In actuality, the employment of women can increase the level of the family income of Arab-Americans that is very important, especially for those Arab-Americans who have a low level of income.
At the same time, new educational opportunities and higher education help Arab-American women become more independent and socially active. As a result, nowadays they attempt to enter new areas, especially business, where men traditionally dominated. At this point, the position of Arab-American women is not really different from the position of other American women. Even though the image of a business lady may be viewed as unusual for Arab-American women, it does not prevent them from entering business and its development.
Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning the fact that Arab-American women still remain underrepresented on the top executive level, but it is actually not the problem of Arab-American women but rather the problem of men-women relationship in American society at large because the problem of glass ceiling still persists in the US (Bagby, et al, 183). On the other hand, it should be said that there is a growing to the increasing of the presence of Arab-American women in the American labor market and they attempt to take a better position and get a better job competing with men as well as women representing other ethnic groups. In this respect, it is worth mentioning the fact that the employment opportunities of Arab-American women are still affected by the existing biases and prejudices dominating in American society.
