Buy an essay on “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid
“Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid is a very original story, which mainly contains the monologue of the mother which is occasionally interrupted by a couple of phrases of her daughter, though these phrases remain unnoticed. In fact, the entire story can hardly be taken seriously because the mother is simply lecturing her daughter from the beginning till the end of the story and her didactic speech seems to be rather exaggerated and it may be viewed as a kind of grotesque rather than a serious learn-how-you-should-live-your-life lecture. The mother practically attempts to make her daughter to live the way she wants to be the best, but the mother does not really take into consideration the position of her daughter and the author intentionally remains the remarks of the daughter almost unnoticed in the entire, tyrant speech. At the same time, by the end of the story it is hardly possible to get rid of the impression that the mother is lecturing her daughter because her own life has failed and she attempts to teach her daughter the lesson of how she should live her own life. In such a context, it is possible to speak about this story as humorous to the extent that humor eventually outgrows into sarcasm.buy an essay
Moreover, the entire speech of the mother has significant contradictions which make it practically impossible to take the whole story seriously. For instance, she attempts to teach her daughter to do the chores, but, in actuality, the mother herself dislikes the chores if not to say hate the chores. In such a way, the mother does not sound very convincing. In stark contrast, the controversies of her lecture, as well as her own life, create rather an ironic mood of the story.
At the same time, the story depicts in details the process of socialization, especially in regard to women. In this respect, it is important to underline that the mother focuses on the process of socialization and reveals a deprived position of girls and women in Jamaica. They occupy a secondary position in the society as well as in the family. In fact, they have to do the routine work, take of children and household and the other mother views it as an ideal image of a woman which should be shaped in the process of socialization.
However, such a view on the process of socialization is quite unusual, at least for me. In my own culture, the position of women is not so deprived and the process of socialization does not imply making women inferior and giving in their social position. For instance, in our culture, it is unacceptable for a girl to give in the argument simply because the opponent is a male.
