In the paper I am going to touch upon the problem of Facebook that has already become the public commons and though created in 2004 it has amassed millions of people around the globe. However, as any phenomenon on the earth, this alternate universe also has its pros and cons. It is up to a person to decide if to log on and check it or remain indifferent and save the precious time for more worthy purposes.
Advantages of Facebook
With the Internet becoming an essential part of our lifestyle, it has become impossible to miss a chance and not to benefit from it. Facebook definitely unites people and makes a surprisingly sophisticated cyber-image of a facebooker out of thousands of details he feels comfortable to share with “friends”. It gives people an opportunity to reconnect with others and post updates or add photos so that people could know what is going on. “Friends” can instantly react to the photos and post their comments that may often provoke heated online discussions. Moreover, there are many applications that are amusing and will never let you be bored. In the so called net of Facebook that has already penetrated into the lives of many people, especially students, everyone may find something that will most likely make him happy and due to the virtual communication people may stay in touch with relatives and friends even if they are far away or ill.
Disadvantages of Facebook
The virtual world of Facebook has changed a lot since it was created and unfortunately developed its disadvantages. Facebook is a time-waster and distracter, it prevents from running in the park or walking in the street, it brings people home to stay on Facebook for hours flipping through thousands of photos, debating with virtual friends, stripping profiles and updating information in order to revamp cyber-images.
Thousands of people are obsessed with it and exchange real life for virtual uninteresting world of false friends created on Facebook. Everyone would like to be a “friend” even if you have seen a person once in your life and will never see him again, therefore, Facebook has given a new meaning to the word “friend”. Sometimes the information a virtual friend gives is not trustworthy, however, people are so worried about how their profiles look like and constantly update them logging on many times a day. It surely prevents them from doing something in the real world and enjoying the life around them, but not one created on Facebook. Moreover, communication on Facebook is often ridiculous, sometimes it results in misunderstanding, for instance, believing that one adds a star as a friend with the star accepting the “friendship” request. A good example of a funny situation people may find themselves in Facebook is the following dialogue:
Kathy: “My friend Susan just started on the facebook and she helped me set one up too. She’s using it to talk to her son in graduate school and I thought that since you have trouble returning voicemails from your dear old mother I’d give it a try”.
Greg: “Hey, Ms! I think you’ve got the wrong person. Honest mistake, I’m sure”.
Kathy: “Dear Gregory, obviously you’ve inherited your father’s crackpot sense of humor. This is a good way for us to keep in touch, but I can’t seem to see the rest of your page. Is something wrong? Ok, well keep in touch and call soon. Mom”.
Greg: “Hey, yeah…! Don’t really know what is going on but I’m not your son”.
To sum it up, Facebook cannot help but play a part in the life of modern people and it obviously fulfills its function of bundling up the whole world. But it frequently creates a mess and kills time, sets new standards for privacy and brings up a new culture of people who know much more about themselves. I dislike the changes it brings with it and will never exchange real life and true friendship for virtual one with people whom I may hardly know and who keep on filtering away their energy on Facebook.
